This page is about Data Privacy Agreements and Vernier apps including Graphical Analysis, Graphical Analysis Pro, Spectral Analysis, Instrumental Analysis, and Vernier Video Analysis. Legacy apps no longer updated such as Logger Pro, Logger Lite, LabQuest Viewer, and Video Physics are included. Hardware with embedded software such as LabQuest app is also included. This page is not about Vernier Connections, not an app, but a learning platform requiring different privacy statements.
Schools and school districts often ask Vernier Science Education about signing some form of a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) or other legal agreement regarding the sharing of student personally identifiable information (PII) with Vernier.
Such agreements are very important in protecting the privacy of student information, and Vernier wholeheartedly supports the privacy of student users. We understand how important this is. As a result Vernier apps are built with a privacy-first approach, and such that no PII is even available to Vernier.
The best way to protect student data is to never collect it in the first place. As a result, our apps collect no student information, and so are as safe as we can make them for student use. In particular, apps such as Graphical Analysis (and others named above),
- have no user logins
- access no user information
- run locally (eg, an inserted video is kept locally, and is not uploaded to a server)
- and store no user information on servers
As a result a DPA is almost always not relevant, since DPAs discuss how a vendor will protect the PII it holds–and Vernier does not hold any PII of users of these apps.
A more formal Vernier Applications Privacy Notice and Vernier Applications Terms of Use are available on our website. Note that our Legal Center includes separate privacy statements and terms of use documents for apps, the Vernier website, and platforms such as Vernier Connections. As a result take care to review the correct document if you start from the Legal Center page.
Most school districts make use of our Applications Privacy Statement and Applications Terms of Use documents in lieu of a DPA, since no PII is ever shared with Vernier.
If your school or district still requires a DPA or other agreement, we need the following information in order to respond to a request.
- The name of the app or apps the request is regarding, so that we can be sure to respond in context
- A statement explaining how the existing privacy statement does not suffice, given that Vernier apps do not have access to PII. We need this information to completely address your concerns that go beyond the existing legal statement.
- Send this information to privacy@vernier.com to proceed.
