This Windows-only firmware updater will fix the problem with Go Direct Temperature Probes reporting temperatures of around 500°C when the actual temperature is near 0°C. All affected probes will have serial numbers beginning with 0F3 and will be running firmware version 5.1.0. Additional details can be found at www.vernier.com/til/15964

Requirements for the update tool

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 (no macOS support)
  • 32bit or 64bit architecture. ARM architectures are not supported
  • USB cable

Install the update tool

  1. The installer can be downloaded from here: Vernier-GDX-Firmware-Update.exe
  2. Double-click the installer to start.
  3. The installer will open and copy a few files.
  4. The installer will then start a separate installer for Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable (x86).
  5. The installer will then start a separate installer for a tool called SAM-BA.
  6. Click Close to finish.

Update Go Direct Temperature Probe

  1. Open a File Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Vernier GDX Firmware Update
  2. Connect your Go Direct Temperature to the computer with a USB cable.
  3. Double-click the GDX-Atmel-Firmware-Update.exe
  4. The updater should detect the connected probe and determine if it needs to be updated.
  5. If the device needs a firmware update, the updater will do so.
  6. The application will indicate whether the update was successful or not.
  7. Press Enter to close the updater.
  8. If you are updating more than one probe, unplug the first probe and connect the next. Repeat from step 3.

If an update is unsuccessful, please fill out this firmware update request form to initiate a return to Vernier for repair.

Uninstall the update tool (optional)

Once you are done with your updates, you may wish to uninstall the update tool.

  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Vernier GDX Firmware Update\
  2. Double-click the Uninstall.exe
  3. Click Close to finish.
