Yeast Beasts in Action

Experiment #6 from Exploring Life Science

Education Level
Middle School

Introduction

Yeast is a microorganism that can break hydrogen peroxide down into water and oxygen gas. In this experiment you will investigate yeast activity in acidic, neutral, and basic mixtures. You will observe yeast activity by measuring pressure caused by the oxygen gas they produce.

Objectives

  • Use a Gas Pressure Sensor to measure pressure.
  • Measure and compare yeast activity in acidic, neutral, and basic mixtures.
  • Make a conclusion about yeast activity.

Sensors and Equipment

This experiment features the following sensors and equipment. Additional equipment may be required.
